Whimsical Bear with Balloons Birthday Card

Whimsical Bear with Balloons Birthday Card

Hi,

I am Ruri Duarte and I am one of the designers for The Foiled Fox.  I love art, drawing and any kind of art supply imaginable, especially pens, markers, and paints.  Copic markers are an all-time favorite of mine!  So, it is no surprise that this bear birthday card has lots of Copic coloring.

To make this card get together a few supplies and let’s get coloring!  By the way, don’t worry about remembering all the supplies.  I will list them at the end.

First steps:

This card is a standard A2 size (4.25″ x 5.5″).  I started with a card base of Neenah Solar White (a standard 8.5″ x 11″ piece of paper cut in half to 8.5″ x 5.5″ and scored on the long side at 4.25″).  While the Neenah card stock is out, cut a piece 3.75″ x 5″.  This is for the main panel the bear and party birds will sit on. Save the rest for stamping and die cutting the bear, birds, cake, happy birthday and balloons.  All this is cut out of one piece of 8.5″ x 11″ piece of card stock!

Next, cut a panel, using the stitched rectangle dies from Lawn Fawn.  The paper is Lawn Fawn’s adorable plaid paper (the panel is approx. 3.75″ x 5″).

Stamping:

With the left over piece of white card stock, stamp in your favorite black ink, the bear, birds and cake from the Lawn Fawn Party Animal set and the balloons from Paper Smooches.

Oh goody, now my favorite part – the coloring.  Above is a close-up so you can see what I did.  But here are some abbreviated instructions.

First, using the Memento’s ink pad “Summer Sky” and a blending tool, I applied the ink in a circular motion.  Make the top a little more intense and feather it down, using less and less ink to the white card stock at the bottom.  Stamp the branches from the Hero Arts’ Color Layering Bird and Branch set.

Color the bear, cake, balloons and birds you previously stamped with Copic markers. Or of course, you can use whatever medium you like.  Here is a mini guide of the colors I used:

Bear:  E97, E99, E25
Birds: Y17 and YG25
Cake: You decide what you like
Balloons: RV66 (pink), B12 (blue), Y17 (yellow)

I like to start with the lightest color and do the shadowing with the darker colors, then go back and blend with the lightest color again until it is to my liking.

For the balloons, color (using a light touch) with the yellow, pink and blue Copic markers.  First color the blue, then pink, finally yellow.  Because of the magic blending abilities of Copic markers, they will blend and create that wonderful ‘overlap’ look but for an extra accent I colored the overlay area with V20 (purple) and Y17 (yellow).  Just be sure not to be too intense with the colors.

Finally, with all the coloring done, die cut-out the bear, cake and the birds.  The last step before assembly is to die cut “Happy Birthday” from the Lawn Fawn Happy Birthday border die.  Just grab a scrap piece of red card stock and die cut it.

Assembly:

  1. Mount the plaid piece of paper on the front of the card stock base.
  2. Next, add dimensional foam tape to the back of the white panel with the blue blending ‘sky’ and mount on top of the plaid paper.
  3. Add twine to the balloons by adhering the twine to the back of the balloons.  Get an idea where the bear will go and glue down the twine so it will be behind the bear.  Add foam squares to the back of the bear, cake and birds.  Place and mount.
  4. Place and glue (I use a liquid glue pen – they are really handy) the happy birthday
  5. Add embellishments
