Garden Fresh Flowers

Garden Fresh Flowers

Hi there, Creative Friends,

I am sharing a card design featuring the brand new stamp set, Garden Fresh from Penny Black’s new Springtime release. The stamp set has three stamps, all with a floral display in a rustic, pottery-like pitcher. I fell in love with these flowers so I just had to make something with them!

This is a simple card to make (don’t let all the words below scare you!).

I started with a hot-pressed watercolor panel that I mounted in my stamp positioner and the stamp centered over the panel.

I began with the pitcher and lightly inked it up with Faded Jeans distress ink. Since there are some small areas to ink, I used mini distress inks and/or markers where I could. I lightly spritzed the stamp to get the ink moving a tiny bit and stamped it.

Now that I had an impression of the jug, I very gently smoothed out the color with a damp brush. With this kind of stamp, it is important to try and preserve the shading and subtle differences the stamp provides. So, I have found going methodically and using little water really helps.

To add more shade to the pitcher, I smooched a little Chipped Sapphire and Black Soot distress inks onto my glass mat.  Then, using a small, moistened brush, I carefully added bits of the darker colors where appropriate.

I moved on to the leaves, first inking them with a Bundled Sage distress marker, spritzing, then stamping. I continued to do this until I got a good impression, then added a little Forest Moss for more depth of color.

Finally, I had worked my way to the flowers… my favorite part! I inked one flower at a time, spritzed it, then reinked in areas I wanted more saturation of color. Then, very gently I smoothed out the color with my damp brush. The colors I used were Mustard Seed, Worn Lipstick, Picked Raspberry, and a dash of Festive Berries for a more intense color.

When I was satisfied with the flowers, I added the black centers by inking the stamp with a black Tombow marker, spritzing, then stamping.

To finish the painting, I added a little shading to the bottom of the pitcher, using a watery mixture of Black Soot. This ‘grounded’ the vase of flowers. Then, using a very small brush, I carefully splattered tiny dots of Sumi ink and allowed the panel to dry.

Meanwhile, I made a white card base, added a piece of patterned paper to the front.

With the flower panel dry and using a Stitched Stacker die from Penny Black, I trimmed the panel, added a foam backing, and mounted it onto the front of the card.

I wasn’t going to add a sentiment but in the end, added ‘special thanks’ from my sentiment stash.
