You’re One Hot Tamale!

Hi Creative Friends,

I am sharing a light-hearted card design using the Hot Diggity stamp set by Penny Black. It is perfect for the upcoming Cinco de Mayo (May 5th) celebration or it can be used for many other occasions too. In fact, my husband loves the Latin culture so this was a fun way to say, Happy Anniversary.

I didn’t quite know what I wanted to do when I started this card. I only knew I was using the adorable Mariachi dogs in the Hot Diggity stamp set. So, with that thought in mind, I stamped the dogs onto white card stock using alcohol marker-friendly ink like Lawn Fawn Jet Black ink. Then, colored them with a few Copic markers (see supply list). Once the dogs were done, I fussy cut them out and added foam squares to the back, and set them aside.

Next, I checked out pictures of serapes (Latin poncho or shawl) on the web to get an idea of how they make them so bright and beautiful. They come in so many fun colors and I thought a panel mimicking a serape would make a nice backdrop for the Mariachi band!

To make the serape section, I first applied a piece of double-stick adhesive sheet to a small cardstock panel. Then I cut varying widths of colored card stock, peeled off the release paper to the adhesive sheet, and started creating a pattern by applying strips one by one.

Well, I now had the serape panel and the ‘band’ but wasn’t quite sure where to go from there. I decided to create a night scene by doing some ink blending on a card front panel. For the top two-thirds of the panel, I first cut a mask for a moon and placed on the panel. Next, I blended on a few distress inks. I used Chipped Sapphire, Pumice Stone around the moon, and Black Soot around the edges. In the bottom half of the panel, I just used Black Soot to create a completely black border.

To complete the background, I peeled off the moon mask and lightly blended on a little Pumice Stone around the edges. I then stamped the top of the trees in the Snow Trails stamp by Penny Black. I used Versafine black ink for this.

As many of you know, I love Versafine black onyx ink for stamping sentiments or anytime I want a crisp, true black impression. The only thing is that it has a long open time. This is great when you need it but when you don’t, be sure to heat set it or wait until it is completely dry, otherwise, you may smear the impression…ugh!

Moving on… using a card stock card base, I adhered the background panel to the front, then applied the mini serape panel. The Mariachi band was added next by peeling off the release paper on the foam squares on the back and stuck them in place.

I didn’t have an appropriate sentiment so I hand-lettered one using my fave, Dr. Ph. Martin Bleedproof White ink and a calligraphy holder and nib.

This completed my silly and playful card. My husband thought it was a lot of fun. After so many years of making anniversary cards, it was a great change of pace!
