Spooky Hugs

Hi Cardmaking Friends,

Every year, I look forward to making eerie skies and creepy scenes for my Halloween cards. This year, I am starting with not the scariest of Halloween cards, but still a super fun one. This one especially struck my fancy since I have a charming, yet very mischievous, solid black cat with bright yellow eyes. So, you can see, I had to make something using the new Spellbinders Bewitched die set.

I started with the cat, of course. Using Raven black cardstock, I cut out two cat silhouettes and a little pink for his ears and nose. The two cats we stacked and glued together for strength. The eyes were cut from Bristol paper and colored with Mustard Seed yellow and a touch of Twisted Citron green (all the supplies used are listed below).

Next was the witch’s hat. I cut it out of Bristol paper so I could get the best blending of inks. I used Picked Raspberry ink first, then layered on Seedless Preserves, and finished with Villainous Potion distress inks.

The Bewitched cat’s companion was a pumpkin. I used Penny Black’s Pumpkin Parade die set and cut one out of Bristol paper. Then, I ink-blended Mustard Seed distress ink and added layers of Ripe Persimmon and Crackling Campfire. A touch of Peeled Paint green was added for the top.

The minute I saw the Color Layering Clouds stencil set from Hero Arts, I knew I had to use it! It helps create awesome skies for your project. Using a Bristol paper panel and starting at the bottom, I blended on Mustard Seed, Ripe Persimmon, and Crackling Campfire. Then, gradually making my way to the top, I added Uncharted Mariner and Chipped Sapphire distress inks. Now that the background was done, I could use the stencil set to add the clouds. I used the most intense Ripe Persimmon and Crackling Campfire for the bottom half and Chipped Sapphire and Black Soot for the top half. This eerie sky was mounted onto a slightly larger black cardstock card base.

To create the moon, I used a medium-sized circle die and Bristol paper. I blended one Mustard Seed, Ripe Persimmon, and Crackling Campfire inks. My blue ink dauber still had some blue ink on it so I used it to gently add a few wisps of blue. To add more drama, I used a little Tim Holtz Distress Grit Paste: Snowfall, mixed with a tiny bit of Chipped Sapphire and the medium-sized mask from the Tim Holtz Layering Mask: Moon stencils.

Finally, I cut out a hill from Bristol paper and ink-blended it with Peeled Paint, Forst Moss, Rusty Hinge, and Black Soot.

Assembly was quick. The hill and moon were added to the front of the card base and background. Using foam squares, the pumpkin and black cat were next.

For the sentiment, I letterpressed a bunch of sentiments using Spellbinders’ Halloween Icons and chose one that fit the recipient

And there you have it, my first Halloween card of the season. What do you think?
