Winter Greenery

Winter Greenery

Hi Cardmaking Friends,

The theme of today’s holiday card design is a perennial favorite of mine. I love poinsettias. They have beautifully rich and velvety petals and are so iconic of the season!

To bring my card to life, Kristina Werner’s Winter Greenery was a perfect match. It has a stunning selection of poinsettias and accompanying foliage.

I began my card design by stamping all the flowers and foliage pieces onto a piece of hot-pressed watercolor paper using Versamark ink, then heat-embossing them with gold embossing powder.

The painting was next. I used a few distress reinkers for this. You can see the colors in the supply list below but here is a quick guide.

Flowers: Saltwater Taffy, Abandoned Coral, Festive Berries, and Wild Honey for the centers
Foliage: Crushed Olive, Rustic Wildress, and Forest Moss. The holly was painted with Evergreen Bough and Rustic Wilderness
Berries: Abandoned Coral, Festive Berries, and Seedless Preserves

Next was the card base. I saw this layout a while ago and fell in love with it. I have shared it before in a project. You can see it here or pop over to Elizabeth Price’s Instagram account (IG: @seeinginkspots) to see her beautiful post that inspired me.

The secret to this layout is how to fold and layer the card base. I begin by making a 4 1/2″ x 6″ (when folded) card base with the fold on the side from Chiffon cardstock. Then cut off 1 1/2″ from the front right edge, revealing the inside of the card. Nectar ink was blended on the edge.

Next, I cut two panels using the Penny Black Semi-Circle Stackers. The larger panel is cut from white cardstock, and the second size down was cut from Chiffon cardstock (see supply list below). I also cut a small white cardstock panel using the smallest die in the set.

Hint: if you want to stamp a sentiment inside, stamp it on the large white panel before it is mounted,

From there, it is just a matter of getting the layering sequence down. The sequence goes like this: first, glue the larger white cardstock panel to the inside, then mount the Chiffon panel on the shortened front, slightly offset.

I cut out a circle from white cardstock. I used the Papertrey Delicate Circle die, but you can use any circle die you have on hand. The circle was layered on top, then the flowers and foliage were arranged and popped up with foam squares.

The smallest panel was stamped with the sentiment, then gold heat-embossed. It was nestled among the flowers. A few gold glittery drops were added to the center of the flowers and around the floral display for the final touch.
