Hip Hippo Horray!

Hi there,

I am Amber Whittaker and I am part of the design team for The Foiled Fox. I really love making fun, whimsical cards.

This card is made using the Avery Elle Wild Birthday stamp and die set. There are such cute animals and decorations in this set. Below are a few pictures and of course a supply list at the end.

Now I don’t know about you but I like to do all the stamping, then coloring and finally the cut and assembly. I need to do this to keep myself organized. I admire the people that can still keep their heads about them with utter chaos.

I started with Neenah Solar White A2 card base. Next cut a 4″ x 5.25″ white cardstock panel with the Wonky Stitches Elle-ments and while I was there, I cut the little banner from this set too. Next up, using the same white cardstock, I stamped the hippo, balloon, and birdie. I like to use the Memento Tuxedo Black for the stamping when coloring with Copic markers.

I grabbed the blending tool and went to town with 3 distress inks on a piece of 4.25″ x 5.5″ white cardstock panel. I colored the panel by starting with Mowed Grass Distress ink at the bottom of a 4.25″ x 5.5″ white cardstock panel, I colored about 1/3 the panel from the bottom. Working my way up, I overlapped the green a bit to start and then worked my way up the next 1/3 (or so) of the panel, using Salty Ocean Distress Ink. I finished off the top 1/3 of the panel with Tumbled Glass Distress Ink, making sure I overlapped the color a little so to make a smooth transition.

With the panel done, I was free to color my cute little creatures. Using Copic markers, I colored the hippo with C3, C5, C7, the balloon with R24, R27, R29 and the little birdie with Y13 and YR04.

You probably noticed that the birthday hat in the set is a little bigger than the birdie’s hat. I just sketched a quick hat on a piece of white cardstock with a pencil , then traced over it with the Hi-Tec-C (.25mm) black pen. I LOVE this pen! It gives me a super clean, ultra thin line. Now, don’t get me wrong, I still love my Micron pens but this pen goes on a little thinner and cleaner…..(in my humble opinion).

With all the coloring, etc out of the way, I cut with my Big Shot die cutting machine, the distress ink panel with the Wonky Stitches panel die, all the Copic colored critters with the Avery Elle Wild Birthday Elle-ments, hill with a scrap of Lawn Fawn’s Let’s Bokeh in the Snow paper pack and their Simple Stitched Hillside die set and the sun with a scrap of yellow cardstock and My Favorite Things Radiant Sun die.

Assembly was easy-peasy! With Fun Foam mounted on the back of the Wonky Stitched Distress Ink panel to pop it up, I mounted the panel to the card base. With a piece of foam tape on the back of the hippo, balloon, sun, and birdie. Then, I placed them in position.

The one thing I did do before sticking down the balloon though is tie some decorative thread to the hippo’s tail and then to the balloon – pressed the balloon in place.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot a few things….using my .025mm Micron pen, I lettered “Hip Hippo Hooray” on the banner and stuck it to the panel. I was just trying to match the lettering to the curve of the banner. But you could use any of your stamps for the sentiment. And I brushed on a little Rusty Hinge distress ink to the ends of the sun for added interest and added a few clear sequins.
