Beautiful Blooms and how to create a dark background with writing ink

Hi Creative Friends,

I am sharing a new video where I use the Beautiful Blooms embossing folder from Spellbinders to create a dramatic card front. I think this embossing folder is super special and can be used in so many ways. Here is just one idea.

Below is the video that steps you through how to create colorful flowers and leaves and a rich, dark background using Sumi or drawing/writing ink.

As you saw in the video, the flowers and leaves were colored using a few of my favorite distress inks, plus a few Tombow dual brush pens (see supply list). Then, using the small finger ink daubers makes coloring small areas easy.

I fell in love with the super dark coverage of the ink, and the way it behaved on the watercolor paper – not bleeding or feathering. It is hard to see in the photos but the ink also has a beautiful satin sheen.

I couldn’t bear to trim off any of the flowers so this is a large 4 3/4 x 8 1/4″ card. The entire front is the embossing and painted watercolor paper panel. For the sentiment, I used a tried and true set by Papertrey Ink called Perfect Pairs: Essentials.

Painting the background took some time, but it was worth every minute!

I hope this video inspired you to try your hand at using drawing/writing ink for the background. Dark colors work best so a navy or even a rich red with be stunning!
