Beautiful Blue Cornflowers

Beautiful Blue Cornflowers

Hi Creative Friends,

We are super excited to welcome Heather Telford (IG: @heather.telford) back on our blog! She is a super talent and always brings wonderful things to share. This time she is sharing beautiful blue Cornflowers created from a stamp set by the Aall and Create company.

I am happy to be sharing cards on the Foiled Fox blog again but it’s been a while so perhaps I will introduce myself. I live in Canada now but was born and raised in Australia. I call both countries home and would highly recommend both if you are thinking of travelling. I have always loved art and craft and have dabbled in quite a few different types and techniques. I teach in person classes in Ottawa and offer online classes in both card making and gel printing.

One of my favorite techniques when stamping is to ink a stamp and let a spritz of water move the ink around for a watercolor effect. I used this technique to create two cards with the solid cornflower stamp from the Aall & Create cornflower stamp set. The set includes a solid flower stamp, an outline flower stamp with added text, and two word stamps.

For both cards I worked in a stamp positioner so I could double stamp when I wanted extra ink or water on the images. I worked on Fabriano hot pressed watercolor paper and used distress inks for the stamping. I inked the petals with a mix of salty ocean and prize ribbon distress inks and the leaves and stems with a mix of forest moss and peeled paint inks. Some flowers look bolder than others because I did initial prings then second generation stamping to create paler flowers.

Even though I used only one flower stamp I was able to make them look different by bending the stem part of the stamp in different directions. The stamps are photopolymer and the stems are quite narrow making it possible to bend and reposition the stem on the stamp postioner.

Once the stamping was completed I used a paintbrush and water to blend the ink here and there; I didn’t go over every petal or stem because the spritz of water during the stamping phase had already blended the inks to a certain extent. To finish the cards I popped up the panels on an extra layer of cardstock and added the vintage typewriter style words in versafine clair nocturne ink.

Cornflowers hold a special place in my heart as I had them in my wedding bouquet and flower crown. I have always loved blue but there are not a lot of blue flowers suitable for bouquets so I was very happy when the florist agreed to use cornflowers along with some pale pink roses.
