A Winterful Life
Happy New Year!
I am starting the new year with a soft and wintery card design, just like the weather outside. Our winters aren’t snowy, like the card design, but we have rain and lots of it. This always sets the stage for a winter scene! To help with my scene, Penny Black has created another delightful winter stamp set called Simple Joys. It is perfect for the season!
I began my card design by stamping the birds on a branch stamp, using Nocturne waterproof ink onto a 5″x7″ hot-pressed watercolor panel. After the ink had dried completely, we were ready to add the background. We used Chipped Sapphire ink to blend the color, being careful not to get any color on the birds. A little Chipped Sapphire on the leaves or berries is no problem, as the leaf and berry color will mask it, but the birds really need to remain free of color, at least for now. If you want to make sure you don’t get any ink on the birds, then stamp the birds on masking paper, fussy-cut them, then apply over the top of the stamped birds and continue blending. This will ensure the birds to be ink free!
Before applying any ink, place one of the stencils from the Penny Black Background Basics stencil set over the panel (you will want to secure it there, then blend your ink). This will create a nice border around the panel!
There was one more step too. To add interest, I tore a strip of copy paper into a hill shape and used it to mask the hill as I blended on the ink
Once the background was done, I set off to paint the birds and other details. I used a few distress reinkers and/or ink pads for the color. All the colors used are in the supply list below.
Now that the painting was done, and with the stencil still in place, I splattered white Dr. Ph. Martin’s Bleedproof ink over the panel and added more bits of white ink on the branches, leaves, berries, and birds where snow would naturally pile up.
There is a sentiment included in the Simple Joys stamp set, but I wanted a little bolder type, so I used a sentiment from the Winterful Life stamp and die set by Penny Black.
To finish this sweet little card, I mounted the panel onto an Alabaster card base!
