Piece of Cake… a birthday cake for you

Piece of Cake… a birthday cake for you

Hi Crafty Friends,

I couldn’t resist sharing this huge piece of cake with you using the new Neat & Tangled Piece of Cake stamp and die set. First of all, I LOVE cake and second, this is a super fun coloring project. This card was made with a number 8 candle for my granddaughter’s friend’s birthday party but I hope this doesn’t discourage you from trying it yourself, it works for any age person young at heart. It is so festive and fun!

The focal point of this card is, of course, the ‘piece of cake’. The Neat & Tangled cake stamp is complete with the cake and little people. It also includes a confetti stamp and other goodies.

To start, I stamped the cake stamp onto a piece of Neenah white cardstock with Memento Tuxedo Black ink since it is Copic marker friendly. Since it was for a little girl, pink was the color of choice!

Oh, I should mention, I did make one change. Before I stamped the cake onto my paper, I blocked out the candle with a sliver of a post-it note. I then inked up the stamp and before I stamped onto the paper, I removed the piece post-it note, then stamped. This effectively masked off the candle so I could add the number later in place of the candle.

I launched into the simple coloring of the cake and little people using all sorts of Copic colors. Usually, I call out the specific colors of Copic markers but one of the beauties of this stamp is that you can color it any way you want and it still would turn out great. It would also look wonderful in watercolors!

With the cake and people completely colored, I used the matching die and cut it out and set it aside. Next, I cut a panel slightly smaller than the front of the card base and lightly blended Spun Sugar distress ink in a large circle so that when the cake is mounted the pink will peek out on the sides and top of the panel. I then stamped the confetti stamp several times on the top and sides and colored them in with assorted Copic marker colors.

There were only a few things left to do. First, with my blending tool, I added a ‘base’ of darker pink ink for the cake to give it some ‘grounding’. I used Picked Raspberry and Spun Sugar distress ink.

Then, the panel was mounted on the card base, the cake was added with some foam tape. The number 8 was cut from the My Favorite Things Pop-Up Numbers and colored with purple Copic markers. A pear-shaped piece of card stock was colored and added to the top of the ‘8’ for the flame. The completed candle was then mounted with foam tape too.

To finish off the card, a ‘Happy Birthday’ sentiment was stamped onto black card stock and heat embossed with white embossing powder. It was cut into a strip and mounted with foam tape.

I should mention that the Piece of Cake sentiment stamp set coordinates with this stamp and die. Silly me, I didn’t discover this until it was done and the card was on its way to the birthday party – ugh!

Anyway, the only thing remaining was to add a little fun by slathering some clear IrRESISTible Pico embellisher to give a glossy finish to the frosting, candle,  and cherry.
