We are starting out the week with a fanciful floral theme for this Mother’s Day card design. It features a few new and charming Papertrey Ink stamps and dies, namely Fanciful Flowers, Lovely Brackets, and Larger than Life: Mom die.
We began this card design by creating an alcohol ink panel. We haven’t brought out our inks for a play in a while and thought it would make a lovely background.
As many of you know, alcohol inks work best on synthetic paper, like Yupo paper. This type of paper doesn’t allow the ink to absorb into it. It sits on top, allowing it to move and form beautiful organic-like patterns on the paper. This is especially true when you add droplets of alcohol solution or high-alcohol content alcohol (90% or above).
So, with this in mind, our technique was to add a few droplets of each color of ink (in this case, butterscotch and watermelon) on the panel, drop the gold in the center of each of the colored droplets, then add a generous amount of alcohol solution to allow the ink to move freely. The more solution you add, the lighter the colors will be. To control the pattern a little, we gently moved the ink around with our heat tool on a very low heat setting so as not to warp or melt the paper! Once the panel was done, it was set aside to dry.
In the meantime, using a long white cardstock card panel than usual (4.25″ x 6.5″) and the Fanciful Flowers die, we cut out the floral pattern on the bottom of the 4.25″ end. Wanting to preserve the longer height of the panel, we were careful not to cut all the way to the top.
While we were cutting and using white cardstock, we cut out two bracket panels using the Lovely Brackets die set by Papertrey Ink. When the smaller panel was cut, we added a thin foam backing so we could pop it up later.
We started to assemble by cutting a 4.5″ x 6.75″ white card stock panel and preparing a matching white card base that was the same size when folded. The 4.5″x6.75″ panel was then glued to the front of the card base.
A section of the alcohol ink-colored panel was added to the back of the Fanciful Flowers panel so that the beautiful pattern and colors showed through the cutouts. Then, with the remaining alcohol ink panel, we cut out “Mom” using the Larger than Life: Mom die.
To put it all together, we added a piece of metallic gold ribbon we had in our stash to the floral panel, then mounted the larger bracket. Before mounting the smaller bracket on top, we stamped in black ink “you’re the best”.
Before adding our last element, the alcohol-inked ‘Mom”, we stacked and glued a white card stock “Mom” to the back to give it more strength, then glued it to the top of the brackets.
And there we have it… a colorful and fanciful card for the upcoming Mother’s Day! ♥
