A Woodland Winter

A Woodland Winter

Hi Creative Friends,

I am thrilled to share a card design that features one of my favorite subjects … a woodland scene complete with a sweet pair of deer. The stamp is Woodland Pair from Penny Black,  the queen of nature!

This stamp is inclusive! You need nothing else but the stamp, a few inks for painting, and it is very helpful to have a stamp positioner.

Before I began though, I prepped my 5″x7″ hot-pressed watercolor panel by taping a 1/2″ border around the whole panel. I use a very low-tack tape. My favorite is the Spellbinders Craft Tape but the Pixie Purple Tape is good too (see supply list).

Once the border was taped, I mounted it in my stamp positioner and centered the stamp. Using Versafine Clair Nocturne ink, I inked and stamped the image onto my panel, being careful to avoid inking and stamping the deer. I added a little more ink where needed and restamped.

When the ink was dry (make sure it is so it doesn’t smudge) I cut out a circle mask and placed it on the sky area, then blended on some distress inks.

First, I added a faint bit of Wild Honey, then Dried Marigold for the reflection of the moon. Next, I added Evergreen Bough and Uncharted Mariner to the sky. The final layer of ink was Chipped Sapphire to darken the edges. When finished, I sprayed a fine mist of water to the sky, shielding the other areas with paper. (The Spellbinders mister is fabulous for this!)

Next was the sweet deer duo. I stamped the deer with Vintage Photo, then added a tiny bit of Ground Espresso for their backs and antlers.

A little of Chipped Sapphire was used to shade the snow area.

The moon mask was removed, and then it was lightly shaded using one of the Tim Holtz Layering Moon Masks.

When the panel was done, I lightly splattered it with Dr. Ph. Martin’s Bleedproof white ink by adding some to my brush, then gently flicking the brush with my finger.

While the white ink was still wet, I gently added white glitter and quickly tapped it off. This gave the scene a magical, lightly sparkled finish.

When all was dry, the panel was mounted onto a 5″x7″ cream card stock card base.

The card was done. I was enjoying the serene nature of the card so much, I opted to let the scene speak for itself and didn’t add a sentiment.
