Not too long ago, I shared a card design with Winter Bears walking hand-in-hand (if you missed that one, check it out here). I loved working with these bears so much that I had to make another design featuring other adorable bears in the set.
This design combines a few of my favorite stamp sets to create the scene. I started with a Fabriano hot-pressed watercolor panel, but as you know, you can use any watercolor paper you prefer.
I wanted the cute mama and baby bears in the foreground so those were stamped first with Versafine Black Onyx ink, then dried the ink thoroughly so I wouldn’t smudge the ink. I also stamped the bears onto masking paper, cut them out, and placed them over the bears to protect them while I worked on the rest of the scene.
With the watercolor panel and Penny Black’s Landscape stamp mounted in my stamp positioner, I stamped just the horizon line for now. I used a black Tombow pen so I could color only the line and stamp.
Leaving the panel and stamp in the positioner, I colored the sky with Speckled Egg and Chipped Sapphire distress ink.
Next, I masked off the horizon line so I could stamp a few trees from the Penny Black Nature’s Friend stamp set. Once they were stamped, I removed the mask and stamp another tree below the horizon line. I used a combination of Evergreen Bough and a little Peeled Paint distress inks. Finally, I stamped a few trees from the Landscape stamp with Versafine Black Onyx ink.
The scene was nearly set. I had all the trees and bears, I just needed a pond so with my trusty pencil I drew a wavy line. When I was happy with it, I traced over it with a Pigma Micro pen.
Coloring the bears and pond was next. I removed the masks from the bears and used a few distress inks to color. The bears were lightly colored with Gathered Twigs. The scarves were colored with Candied Apple and Crushed Olive (for mama), and Peacock Feathers for baby. The pond was colored along the edges with Chipped Sapphire and Broken China, with the center lightly colored with Tumbled Glass.
To finish the scene, I splattered Dr. Ph. Martin Bleedproof ink over the panel using an old toothbrush, dipping it in a pool of white ink, then flicking the bristles so the paint would splatter in a fine mist.
The panel was mounted onto a Mint Julep cardstock card base to finish. ♥
