A Christmas Tree Hunting We Will Go

Today is the last day of Heather Telford and The Foiled Fox Holiday Traditions event 😕. We have had a blast reading all your awesome comments and traditions – thank you so much. I know for me, I have been inspired to add a few more traditions to our holiday!

Now, on to sharing our last tradition. This tradition reaches back to my early days of cutting down our own tree in the mountains. The stamp set is from a super cute Cool Christmas stamp and dies set by My Favorite Things. The four crazy snowmen in the car remind me of my four brothers – and they are just as crazy!

This card design all starts with creating a long Neenah white card base (4″ x 8.5″) and a matching 4″ x 8.5″ Bristol paper front panel. Next, I stamped and colored several trees and the snowmen riding in the car onto a separate piece of card stock. I used Copic friendly ink, like Lawn Fawn’s Jet Black Premium and Copic markers to make it happen. When they were done, I cut them out using the matching dies and set them aside.

It was time to make the background. So, using the Bristol paper panel I had just cut, I made a very light pencil line where the hills would be. To make it easy, I used the MFT Drifts and Hills stencil. The edges of the stencil made a nice clean line.

With the lines of hills in place, I was ready to randomly stamp the assorted trees with the same black ink as before. Sometimes, I had to mask a few trees (stamp the tree on masking paper, cut out very close to the line and then position the mask over the already stamped tree), then stamp more trees. This creates a stand of trees.

All the trees were now stamped, so I was ready to color the sky. But, first I had to mask all the trees. I also created a mask for the hills with the same masking paper and placed it over the hilly area. Now that everything was masked, I was able to blend on the ink for the sky. I used Picked Raspberry at the horizon, Worn Lipstick in the middle and Spun Sugar distress oxide inks to complete the sky.

When the sky was done, I peeled off the hill masks and moved them to cover the sky. With a very light blue Copic marker, I made a wide blue line to outline the hills, then spread Ranger opaque texture paste over top all the hilly areas to create a snowy scene.

When the texture paste was dry (I didn’t have to wait long) I peeled off the masks of the trees and colored them with Iced Spruce and Mowed Lawn distress inks.

Next, using the MFT’s Snowfall stencil and the same texture paste, I added falling snow by spreading the paste over the stencil and panel. I also added snow to the cutout trees and car the same way. When dry, I arranged and placed the cut-out trees, and the snowmen-filled car with foam tape.

The sentiment was stamped with Versamark ink onto a strip of white card stock that had been colored with Copic markers. It was then sprinkled with WOW! Bright White embossing powder and heat set. Next, it was pressed into place with foam tape.

To finish, I created (I should say, my husband, drew) a wooden sign for the Christmas Tree Farm and I colored it with Copic markers. The sign was added to the scene and a little texture paste was added as well at the bottom of the sign.
