Butterfly Joy by Heather Telford

Hello again,

We are so pleased and excited to present another masterpiece by Heather Telford of the Bits & Pieces blog.  A few weeks ago we featured the elegant Sweet Perfume flower stamp by Penny Black and Heather’s stunning work.  Today, in serene blues and graceful butterflies, Heather has created a breath-taking piece of card art.  We are in awe of the  beauty and artistry that she instills in her projects.  It is simply amazing.

Heather has put together her own personal notes on how she created this card below.  Take a moment too to read a little about Heather.

In my last post for the Foiled Fox blog I used the Finetec artist mica watercolour paint on black cardstock which gives very bold results. Today I am sharing a card made on white watercolor paper so the colors are not as intense but perfect for the subtle wings on the butterflies.
I began by stamping and embossing the three butterflies from the Penny Black Butterfly Trio set in clear embossing powder. I also stamped each butterfly on masking paper, cut them out and positioned them over my three embossed butterflies. With the masks in place, I splattered some spots of masking fluid over the panel.  Next, I stamped the small butterfly all over the panel in chipped sapphire distress ink. Distress ink is very reactive with water so it works well for a watercolour effect. To turn the stamped butterflies into a soft background I painted over the stamping with water blending the blue everywhere except inside the embossed butterflies.

To make the embossed butterflies appear to lift off the page I added extra blue around the edges with a brush and some chipped sapphire stain. I let the background dry before stamping a few more of the small butterfly in chipped sapphire ink. I then pulled the ink from the edges to fill the butterflies with darker ink and splattered a few drops of blue ink over the panel.

With the background completed I removed the masks from my embossed butterflies, the masking fluid spots (you can just rub them off with your finger), then added some colour to the wings with distress markers and Finetec pearl colour paints. The Finetec paints pair nicely with other watercolour mediums so it is possible to add some shimmer to other paints and inks by over-laying or mixing the two. To frame the panel I ran the chipped sapphire distress stain around the edge, added a sentiment then mounted it on a cream card base.

  1. Heather, this is absolutely GORGEOUS! I love it! Because of you, I now own this stamp set but haven’t had time to explore with it… It is a “carrot” dangling before me and now, I am even more inspired to play! 🙂
