Hello Friends,
There are so many beautiful colors of Christmas other than just red and green. Today we are celebrating “Christmas in Pink”. This card was made with beautiful, fresh white poinsettias that were made with the Penny Black Burst of Red die set and are cut from the Shimmer Quartz card stock.
This paper has a luxurious sheen all it’s own and is a heavy weight paper, making it perfect for cutting out shapes with dies. You can’t see it in the photos, but it really makes these poinsettias special and stand out.
To make the background, get together a few alcohol inks, the Flamingo (pink) and Patina (blue-green) from the Beach Deco collection and the Sunshine (yellow) from the Summit View collection and Yupo paper. This is all you need to make a vibrant and stunning background.
In some of our past posts, you may have read about the alcohol inks. We just love them here at The Foiled Fox. They are brilliant, unique, creative and easy to use.
To work with alcohol inks, there is really only one thing that is imperative. It is super important to use specially formulated paper, like Yupo paper, for alcohol inks. The Yupo paper is primarily plastic. The very nature and beauty of the plastic paper is to allow the inks to spread and mingle with other colors. Using regular or non-plastic paper will only result in all the ink soaking into the paper instantly, leaving you with distinct spots that are permanent and completely into the paper.
With the Yupo paper on my work surface, I started making droplets of colors. I started with the Flamingo, then adding the Patina. Since the Patina color is rather blue-green, after placing droplets of Patina on the paper, I added a small bit of yellow (Sunshine) right on top of the Patina ink in some areas. This allowed some flashes of yellow, but more importantly, it blended with the Patina and created a second green that was more of a true green.
After the ink was dry, I flicked on some droplets of blending solution (you can use rubbing alcohol in a pinch) to create even more texture and interest to the background.
The rest of the card was made by die-cutting 3 lacey poinsettias from the Penny Black Burst of Red die and the holly cut from the Penny Black Jolly Holly die and green card stock.
The sentiment was hand-lettered with McCaffery’s white ink and an oblique pen onto *black card stock. I love taking every opportunity I can to hand-letter so this was a perfect time to exercise my writing hand. But don’t fret if you don’t like to hand-letter, any one of your favorite sentiments stamped with Versamark ink and then white embossing powder would be great too!
To finish up, the background was mounted onto a white card base and the poinsettias, green holly and sentiment were placed. The final step was to add a little sparkle by spritzing with a mini mister the top of the card in a few places with a mixture of ‘Pearl’ Perfect Pearls and water and then adding a few dots of **Nuvo Ivory/Seashell Crystal Drops in the center of each of the flowers… and Viola!
* it makes a big difference what paper you use for lettering. Be sure to test your paper for bleeding or feathering before lettering. Each of our colored cardstock is tested and chosen for optimum results.
** Nuvo Ivory/Seashell Crystal drops are beautiful but don’t let the word ‘ivory’ mislead you. It is much more pearly, seashell white than ivory in color.
