Hey everyone, it’s Rosali from @ilovestamping again!
Today I have another card project for you featuring an adorable bear from “Ski-sons Greetings” by MFT Stamps! As soon as I saw this stamp set I was smitten! I just can’t help myself when it comes to bear images …♥
For the background, I chose to use Ranger’s alcohol inks. I started experimenting with these inks earlier this year and while they are not a new product they have become very popular amongst cardmakers right now! I love the unique looks you can get with these inks on Yupo paper and I think a lot of you like them, too! So my tutorial for today is gonna focus on how I created my background with the alcohol inks:
- Pick a synthetic paper such as “do it on Yupo” or Tim Holtz’ “Alcohol Ink Yupo”. Unlike traditional cardstock, these have a slick surface and allow alcohol inks to move and mix on top of them!
- I chose to use two ink colors, pink and purple. I applied a line of purple somewhere across the middle of my Yupo panel and a line of pink across the top.
- Right after that (you want to act rather quickly with alcohol inks) I put a good amount of Various Ink Colorless Blender on top. So much that the whole upper part of the paper was wet and the inks started to really flow. I did not put blender at the very bottom because I wanted to keep that part mainly white to indicate “snow” on my card design.
- After that, I carefully tilted the panel to different sides for the inks to mix a little bit and move across the paper.
- I then took a heat tool and carefully blew dry the alcohol ink panel working from different sides. That’s how I got the layered and wavy look!
Tip: Stop as soon as the panel is dry to prevent the paper from curling up. The drying won’t take long at all, I was actually amazed how fast you get a pretty background with this technique!
To finish my panel off I used Copic Opaque White and a small paint brush to splatter “snow” over it. I didn’t use additional embellishments this time except some Black Ebony Nuvo Drops on the bear’s eyes and nose to make them really black and shiny.
I hope I have given you some inspiration to create a card background with alcohol inks! Have an amazing day and happy holidays!! ♥

What a fun card I just love the colors! And I have a list a mile long of MFT stamps I want because each set is cuter then the next! Merry Christmas and thanks for sharing!
Cute card. Awesome background… love the pink/purple combo.
I’m surprised you were able to use a heat tool on Yupo… when I did that it practically melted and completely warped. ????
Thanks, Trina!
I had no issues at all with warping … but my yupo paper was really wet! I also used the TH one which is a bit thicker than other brands. Hope you give it another try. 🙂
Thank you Rosali for your hints and tips on alcohol inks. I love the effect you achieved with them. The whole card is wonderful, beautiful colours and a fantastic design. Very inspiring!

Terrific colors and technique on the background. Truly VIBRANT ! I love the bears pose. Just how I feel when skiing…arms and legs going all different directions.
