Birthday Chicks in a Trio of Color

Birthday Chicks in a Trio of Color

Hi there,

I am popping in with a quick and cheerful card design. It was created in varying shades of magenta, orange and yellow to entice you to put on your creative hat and join us in the Color Trio challenge that Heather Telford and The Foiled Fox have going on right now. You have until the 30th of May – so hurry and get started. The details are at the bottom of this blog. Hope to see you there!

In the meantime, here is another three color design to help get your creative juices flowing.

This card came together quickly but was loads of fun to make. It started with a long narrow strip of hot press watercolor paper (2.5″ x 8″), a flat brush and three AWESOME colors of Dr. Ph. Martin Hydrus watercolors – Hansa Light Yellow, Gamboge, and Quinacridone Magenta. (hey, want to see all the supplies used, check below!)

First, I moistened the paper with clean water and then, starting at the bottom, painted a strip of Quinacridone Magenta and blended upwards. Working my way up the paper, I added another strip of color, this time the Gamboge and then Hansa Light Yellow, blending the colors together.

While the watercolor was drying, I stamped several of the chicks from the My Favorite Things Birthday Chicks stamp set with Memento Tuxedo black ink onto Neenah white card stock. Then, colored them with an assortment of yellow Copic markers (Y0000, Y11, Y15, Y18, Y38, and YR04. The cupcakes and party hats were colored with pinks (RV00, RV11 and R32). Once done, they were cut out using the matching die set.

(I almost forgot, I did take a Zig .005 black pen and added little marks to make the chicks ‘fluffy’.)

To put this all together into a card front, I cut two strips of  Neenah white card stock. One strip was 1 1/4″ x 8″ and the other was 1 5/8″ x 8″. On the wider strip I stamped the sentiment, again using Memento black ink and then heat embossed it with clear embossing powder. Foam tape was added to the back of each strip of white and then pressed onto the edges of the watercolor strip so that the watercolor strip was now sandwiched in between the white strips.

Now that the front is together, it was mounted onto a slightly bigger white card base and the chicks were arranged and adhered with foam tape.

To finish up the card, I added a few yellow enamel dots and yellow and white baker’s twine for one more little accent.

YAY, all done and ready for any upcoming birthday!
