Christmas Poinsettias in Watercolor

Christmas Poinsettias in Watercolor

Hi Friends,

It is always nice to spend some time water coloring, don’t you think? This Christmas Poinsettia card was just the project to relax and start the day.

This card starts with a piece of watercolor paper and the Judkins Poinsettia stencil. The paper was prepped with anti-static powder, then stamped generously with Versamark ink. The stencil was placed on the paper with the inked side on the paper. It was then run through the die cutting machine with enough pressure to press the ink onto the paper and emboss the design.

The paper was generously sprinkled with Ranger Super Fine Gold embossing powder, the excess tapped off and then heat set. This leaves the beautiful poinsettia design ready to watercolor.

Since the gold embossing adds the gold color, I only used two colors, red and green. I started to paint by first brushing a layer of water onto the panel.  Then, started painting, adding more water where I wanted lighter colors.

After I was happy with the colors, I dried the panel with a heat tool. Of course, you can let it dry naturally (which is probably better) but I can never wait!!

The one thing I did have to be patient for is adding the clusters of Nuvo Metallic Bright Gold crystal drops onto the center of each flower.

The sentiment was hand-lettered using an oblique pen holder and the Brause Steno nib. I used Finetec Pearl Mica Watercolors for the ink. I just added water to the color pot and mixed it until it was the right consistency for ink, then brushing the color onto the back of the nib. Merry Christmas was lettered onto vellum, let dry and then cut into a strip.

If you don’t like to letter, no problem! Just stamp and heat emboss your favorite sentiment onto vellum. This creates a beautiful result too!!

The vellum was then wrapped around the watercolor panel, secured with tape on the backside. To complete, a gold foil cardstock panel was adhered to a card base made from Candy Hearts cardstock, then the poinsettia panel on top.

The final touch was to add the gold and clear sequin for extra sparkle!
